Interview with Mr. Rupak Das 34 Rank WBCS 2011

Mr. Rupak Das:: Thank you. At the outset, i would like to appriciate Wbcs made easy team for this great & noble effort.
WBCSMadeEasy:: When and how did the inspiration and idea of joining civil service come in your mind?
Mr. Rupak Das: When i was in 2nd yr, first i heard about Wbcs. I came from humble family that time it was very difficult to know the in and out of this exam. Actually initial target was to get any job to support my family. Later i came to know that Govt officers are re-cruited through Wbcs exam. Then i decided to appear in this exam .
WBCSMadeEasy:: Tell us something about yourself? Educational Qualification, Marks/Division/Class, schooling…..
Mr. Rupak Das : :I am B.com graduate. class 10-79% (2001) class12-72.2% (2003) Hns-69%(2007)
WBCSMadeEasy:: What factors did you consider before selecting your optionals? What were they?
Mr. Rupak Das : : My optionals were sociology & commerce. second optional was choosen becos of academic background. i did select socio becos i realised socio easy to graps and understand in a short span of time.
WBCSMadeEasy:: How did you sustain the study-momentum throughout the year?
Mr. Rupak Das : : In this exam most difficult to sustain the tempo. Becos u have to study long hours . i keep up momentum by adopting selfmotivation approach. i used to discuss with the seniors. I used to read interview of topper. All of these allow u to remain focused and motivated.
WBCSMadeEasy:: How many hours did you study per day? How many months did it take you to complete the core syllabus of Compulsory and optional subjects?
Mr. Rupak Das : :Nobody should try to quantify the hours of study. I used to study 5-6hrs on average. I took 3 months to complete the prelim and took almost 7-8 months to cover main. But it varies person to person. That time i didnot use internet becos internet was not available at my disposal. now i use internet. Internet now may become useful means.
WBCSMadeEasy:: Did u use internet, was it effective?
Mr. Rupak Das : : I used to read TIO and civil service cronicle.
WBCSMadeEasy:: Which newspapers & magazines you went through?
Ans: -----------------------------------NA
WBCSMadeEasy:: Did u took coaching? How was the experience?
Mr. Rupak Das : :I never took coaching frm anywhere. Actually that time i could not afford any coaching. i had to rely on self study.
WBCSMadeEasy:: What about Interview in WBCS? Was the board cordial? What should be a proper preparation?
Mr. Rupak Das : : I appeared in PSC interview 3 times. i find every time board members were very cordial and helpful. My suggt. to all aspirants that don't try to be oversmart and donot indulge in untruthfulness. Be confident and forthright. Actually interview is celebration of yourself who u are ?
WBCSMadeEasy:: Plz suggest some good books for pre, comp, optional.
Ans:Donot overburden your self with large number books.Just you needed to know the trick. For prelim, Go through basic NCRT books. For constituition D.D Basu is a must read. For mental ability RS Agarwal. For Eng, Pk dey sarkar and thorough reading of TIO. Main exam- syllabus has been updated. Although 80% of old syllabi remain in the current exam. For Eng composition, Pk dey sarkar and Roy &martin. For Bengali, Any 10th standard good grammer book like Bamandev chakraborty. For Economics , Debesh sarkar and Mishra -Puri. For Cont. DD Basu and spectrum. For Arithmatic and G.I , K.C Nag ,RS Agarwal. For socio, First build up the basic concept and then go for question -answer. 1st paper- Coser, Bhusan & sachdeva, 2nd paper- srinivas, ahuja. Also for better understanding of the subjecte one needed to study 11-12th standard sociology book. For commerce just follow graduation syllabus. one caution that take commerce optional after consulting ten years question papers.
WBCSMadeEasy:: What should be the strategy for cracking this exam?What message you want to give to all aspirants?
Mr. Rupak Das : : Cardinal principal of winning any race is not how first you can run but how long you can run. So basic strategy is to remain focused and determined to crack this exam. My message is to newcomers that if a most ordinary student like me can pass this exam without coaching, then you definitly can. It is only question of time. All the best .
WBCSMadeEasy:: Was it ur 1st attempt? If not what about previous ones? You are from which batch and what was your rank in WBCS Exam (Plz don't mind)?
Mr. Rupak Das : It was my 3rd attempt. In my 1st attemp, i got selected as R.o in Gr-c. In my 2nd attemp i got selected as Deput assist. Director in consumer affairs department. In my 3rd attempt(2011) , I ranked probably 34th. becos I donot know my exact score.main exam pattern has changed. MCQ type questions have been introduced. Science&technology and Environment two new subjects have been inducted. Emphasis is sifted towards compulsory from optionals. In this syllabus one required to study more thoroughly and say goodbye to suggestion based study.
